Effective Permissions 2013

Update:  The 2014 version is now available.

I’m currently in an amazingly interesting DB training class.  So I decided to do some Vault app programming so that my heart wouldn't explode from all the excitement.  The result is Effective Permissions 2013.  It’s an update of my Effective Folder Permissions 2.0.  The ‘Folder’ part of the name has been dropped since it now does more than just folder permissions.  Files and custom objects can also be managed.

Check out the video:

The main new addition is a view/edit window for object permissions.  You can now edit an Access Control List and see the effect before you commit the change.  It’s also smart enough to determine the source of the ACL and make the
appropriate updates.

All the old features are still there.  So you can still see the Administrators List, and you still have the Permissions Overview, which shows the user-based permissions for a set of folders.

Requirements:

  • Vault 2013 Workgroup / Collaboration / Professional
  • Administrative Rights

  1. Excellent Application!!. Thanks Doug!

  2. Great to hear you “patronize back” the util development and it get new functionality!
It is the highly important util in extended Vault environments like our company has.
I have couple questions regarding it:
    1. Was revoving radiobutton (groups/user) rewoved from Permissions overview deliberately? How to manage groups with it now?
    2. Click on cell in Overview window now generates no the expected dialog for making changes? Was it made deliberate?

  3. It looks like you are comparing my 2013 version with the 2012 version at http://vaultfolderpermis.codeplex.com/
The 2013 version is not based on the 2012 version.
The version on codeplex was not written by me or anyone at Autodesk. Since I work for Autodesk, I am very careful when using outside code. Autodesk doesn’t have a well defined “open-source” code policy. So the safe approach was to just stick to my code base.

  4. Yes, you are right as to how i compare it.
I also should admit that function of managing groups/folder access through overview table is the most utilized function of the util for our company…

  5. Love the userlist from Aliens! ;-)

  6. Excellent Application!!. Thanks Doug!
There is something I am missing in Effective Folder Permission, it only display “Users” is it possible to get it to display “user groups” ?

  7. Sorry. The app only shows the user permissions.

  8. Is it something you will like work on?
I have discovered something more, in the Effective Folder Permission,
if users is member of a group and the group has premission on folder,
the user is display as they have “no access”.
It could be nice to have a feature displaying in grid user and groups members like
    Folder Permission.

  9. Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I don’t plan on adding features any time soon. These apps are just side projects of mine, so I can’t spent too much time on them.
The source code is posted, and other programmers are free to add their own functionality.

  10. Have just got Error “Sum of the columns’ FillWeight values cannot exceed 65535.” on attemt to call for “Permissions Overview”…

  11. Thanks for letting me know. My guess is that there are too many folders for the dialog to handle.
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time right now to look into it. If you have any more details, feel free to email them to me directly.

  12. Fixed in version 4.0.3.0. Just uninstall your current version, re-download and re-install.

  13. I could accept removing the cell qty limitations in 4.0.3.0. Thanks!
