Drawing Compare

Update:  The 2013 version is available from the Vault App Store.

Design Review has this cool feature where you can compare drawings.  Through the magic of API programming, Jan Liska from Autodesk Consulting has hooked this functionality to Vault.  The tool is called Drawing Compare and it easily lets you compare two drawings or two versions or revisions of a drawing from within Vault.  

Requirements:

Vault Workgroup / Collaboration / Professional 2012
Autodesk Design Review 2012

Update: The tool has been updated to include version to version comparisons.  The link above is to version 1.0.2.0, which is the latest version.

To Use:

  1. Run the installer.
  2. Run Vault Explorer.
  3. Select two drawings or two versions of the same drawing.
  4. Right-click and choose Compare Drawings.
  5. In the pop-up window, click the Compare button.

You can also run Compare Drawings after selecting a single drawing.  In this case, the Drawing Compare window will have combo boxes that let you select the revisions that you want to compare.

The tool only works on drawings that have DWF files.

    I have wanted such a functionality for a long time..
    Seems to work great on file revisions.
    But I just have to ask. Could you tweak a version to work with versions as well? (For comparing when not using revisions, and for comparing item revisions)

    This is a great feature, very important to analyze and compare drawings.
    This feature work with only revisions scheme? If work with version too will be cool, is possible?

    I agree with the above, will be extremely handy for pre-release drawings. Management of pre-released files (including revision tables) is just as important as released ones.

    Works well except my additions and deletions show as red and a dashed square instead of red and green. Are there options to control these?

    Is it possible to compare 2 DWFx? all my files are published as DWFx for IE clients.
